The guru in travel advice, The Lonely Planet, has released an advice book for those traveling in 2010.
The guide gives tips and helpful hints for travelers around the world, and some important advice for first timers.
Here is a sneak peak at what is included in the guide:
Be mindful of religious sensibilities
It’s fairly difficult to cause so much offence as to get yourself in to actual trouble, but have a chat with any local expats you run into, they can help.
Take a card from your hotel
On your way out of the hotel, pick up a card with its name and address on it in case you get lost – you will!
Be careful when carrying items such as laptop bags
Anything in an over-the-shoulder bag should go over your head, too, to stop it from being snatched off your shoulder.
Rely on your instincts
Leave the worrying about your safety to those left behind at home.
Use a waterproof pouch for your items when swimming
Don’t take anything to the beach that you’d be mortified to lose – even towels and books can go walkabout when you’re swimming.
Always keep some cash handy
Keep a small amount of cash in an accessible pocket for impulse purchases
Use a wedge under your hotel door
If you’re staying in a hotel where night-time security may be suspect, a wedge under the door will counter unwanted prowlers with duplicate keys.
Keep a copy of your essential documents online
Just in case.
Photograph your gear before your trip
For evidence.
